How upside down text works

There's no way to rotate characters in plain text, so the upside down text generator swaps each letter for a character that looks like it turned over: ɐ for a, ǝ for e, ʇ for t, ∀ for A. Letters such as o, s, x, z, H, I, N, O, S, X and Z look the same either way. Then it reverses the order, so the text reads correctly when you turn your phone around.

A few capitals have no exact upside down twin, so the closest lookalike is used. The table below the generator shows every upside down letter and number.

Three ways to flip text

Upside down turns the letters over and reverses the order, like rotating a sign. Upside down left to right turns the letters over but keeps their order, which looks like text hanging from the line. Word by word keeps the words in place but flips each one.

Mirror text and backwards text

Mirror text swaps letters for reversed versions, like ɘ for e and Я for R, and runs them right to left, as if you were reading in a mirror. Backwards text only reverses the order of the letters. Both are good for puzzles and secret messages, and mirror text is what you need to write something that reads correctly in a reflection.

FAQ

How do I type an upside down a?

Copy ɐ for a lowercase a or ∀ for a capital A. Tap either one in the table above to copy it.

How do I flip text upside down in Word or Canva?

Those apps can rotate a text box: select it and rotate it 180°. That keeps your font and is easier to edit. Upside down characters are for places that can't rotate text, like social media and chats.

Does upside down text work on Instagram and Discord?

Yes. It's made of ordinary Unicode characters, so it pastes into captions, bios, comments and messages.

Can screen readers read upside down text?

No. They read the replacement characters, not the words you meant, so keep anything important in normal text.
