How the Old English text generator works
Old English here means the blackletter style of lettering, also called Fraktur or gothic, not the Old English language. Unicode has complete Fraktur alphabets in regular and bold because mathematicians use them as symbols. The generator swaps every letter you type for its Fraktur version, so the gothic look stays when you paste it.
Five regular capitals, โญ โ โ โ โจ, were already in Unicode as maths symbols before the rest of the alphabet, so they can look slightly different from the letters around them.
Gothic text and medieval letters
Gothic and Old English usually mean the same blackletter look. The gothic group adds crosses โฑ โ , swords โ or a crown โ around it, and the cursed style piles marks on top for a darker feel.
The medieval group borrows from other writing systems: runes, the Old Italic alphabet that Etruscan was written in, and lookalikes from Cherokee and Ethiopic. They only resemble English letters, so use them for decoration rather than anything people need to read.
Old English Text MT and real gothic fonts
Old English Text MT is a real blackletter font that comes with Microsoft Office. In Word, PowerPoint or a design app, choose a font like that from the font menu: it prints more cleanly and stays editable. Use the letters on this page where you can't pick a font, like Instagram, TikTok or Discord.
FAQ
How do I copy and paste Old English text?
Type your text in the box above and tap an Old English style. It's copied straight away, ready to paste into a bio, caption or message.
Does this translate my text into Old English?
No. It changes the lettering, not the language. Translating into the Old English of Anglo-Saxon England needs a dictionary or a translator.
Can I write numbers in an Old English font?
Unicode has no blackletter digits. The bold style uses bold numbers like ๐๐๐, and the regular style leaves numbers as they are.
Can I use this Old English font for a tattoo?
It's fine for a quick preview, but the letters change with your phone's fonts. A tattoo artist will work from a real blackletter font or draw the lettering by hand.
Does Old English text work on Instagram and Discord?
Yes, in display names, bios, captions and messages. Usernames only accept plain letters, numbers and a few symbols.
