How to use it

  1. Type or paste the text you want to underline.
  2. Pick an underline: under each word or under the spaces too, double, wavy or dotted, or an underlined bold, italic or cursive font.
  3. Tap it to copy the underlined text and paste it where there's no underline button.

How underlined text works

Plain text can't be underlined, so the underline text generator adds a combining low line after every letter. A combining character attaches to the character before it, the way an accent does, so each letter carries its own short piece of line, and most apps draw the pieces as one continuous underline.

The plain underline style leaves the spaces alone, so the line can break between words. The spaces-included styles underline the spaces as well, for one line from start to finish.

Underlined text for Instagram, Facebook and X

Instagram, Facebook and X have no underline option, so pasting underlined text is the only way to get one. Use it for a heading in a long caption or a single word you want to stand out.

Each underlined letter is really two characters, the letter and the line, so underlined text can fill a character limit, like the 150 characters of an Instagram bio, about twice as fast.

Where you can underline without a generator

Some apps have a real underline, and it's better to use it there because screen readers and search treat the text normally. On Discord, put two underscores on each side, __like this__. In Google Docs and Word, select the text and press Ctrl+U, or Cmd+U on a Mac. WhatsApp and Reddit have no underline formatting, so copy underlined text from this page instead.
