How the italics generator works

Unicode includes italic versions of every letter, made so mathematicians could write italic variables in plain text. This italic text generator replaces each letter you type with its italic version, so the italics stay when you paste them into Instagram, X, Facebook or anywhere else without formatting.

One letter is the odd one out: Unicode had already encoded an italic h as the physics symbol ℎ, so the italic serif style uses that.

Italic or cursive?

Italic letters are slanted versions of normal letters, used to stress a word, mark a title or quote someone. Cursive, or script, joins up the letters like handwriting. For emphasis inside a sentence, italic sans is the most readable choice. Cursive italics suit a name, a signature or a short quote.

Built-in italics in WhatsApp, Discord and Markdown

Where an app has its own italic formatting, use it: it reads normally to screen readers and search. In WhatsApp, wrap the text in underscores, _like this_. In Discord, Reddit and other apps that use Markdown, wrap it in single asterisks, *like this*.

FAQ

How do I italicize text on Instagram?

Instagram has no italic option. Type your text above, copy an italic font and paste it into your caption, bio or comment.

How do I write in italics on X (Twitter)?

Posts on X don't support formatting, so copy italic text from the generator above and paste it into your post.

What is italicized text?

Text in slanted letters, used to emphasize a word, set off a title or show a quote. In print it's a separate font. Here it's made from Unicode italic letters so you can paste it anywhere.

Why does the h look different in italic serif?

Unicode reused the existing physics symbol ℎ (Planck's constant) as the italic h, so it comes from a different part of the font and can look slightly different.
