How strikethrough text works

The strikethrough text generator adds a combining long stroke after every letter. The stroke is drawn through the character before it, and the pieces join up into a line through the word. The plain strikethrough style strikes the letters and leaves the spaces alone. The one-line strikethrough strikes the spaces too, so the line doesn't break between words.

The other styles use different combining marks: a shorter stroke, a wavy one, or a slash through each letter.

Crossed out text for jokes and corrections

On social media, crossed out text is mostly a joke: you say what you really think, cross it out and write the polite version after it. It also shows a change, like an old price next to a sale price or a finished item on a list.

Keep the crossed out part short. Screen readers may ignore the line or read it out after every letter, so the joke may be lost on some readers.

Strikethrough in Discord, Google Docs, Excel and Word

Many apps have a real strikethrough, which keeps text searchable. On Discord and Reddit, put two tildes on each side, ~~like this~~. On WhatsApp, use one tilde, ~like this~. In Google Docs, press Alt+Shift+5, or Cmd+Shift+X on a Mac. In Excel, press Ctrl+5. In Word, use the abc button with a line through it on the Home tab.
