How to use it

How zalgo text works

Unicode has combining marks: accents, dots, tildes and lines that attach to the character before them. Normal writing uses one at a time, like the accent in é. Zalgo text piles several onto every letter, above, through and below, until they spill into the lines around them. The name comes from Zalgo, an internet horror meme from the 2000s.

Because the marks are ordinary characters, the glitch survives copy and paste.

Light glitch, zalgo and cursed text

A light glitch adds a mark here and there and stays readable, which suits a name or a caption. Zalgo adds more above and below each letter. Heavy zalgo and the cursed styles bury the letters, so keep them for a word or two. The above-only and below-only versions drip in one direction, and the glitched fonts start from Old English, typewriter, small caps or bold letters.

Where glitch text works

Most apps keep combining marks, so glitch text pastes into Discord, Instagram, TikTok and X. Every mark counts as a character, though, so heavy zalgo reaches a character limit quickly. Some apps, games and Discord servers remove the marks or block names and messages that contain too many of them.
